The Nova Scotia Province of Canada has accepted a record number of immigrants in a year. A total of 4,835 immigrants accepted by the province in a year ending October, 2016 including skilled immigrants, refugees, entrepreneurs and immigrants, who arrived on family sponsored visas. The number is highest in last few decades.
This record number of immigrants include considerable amount of Syrian refugees, (About 1500), which were allowed and accepted in the country as per the lenient immigration policy of federal government.
Nova Scotia government lobbied for enhancing immigration quota
Government of Nova Scotia has been making constant efforts to raise the annual immigration quota of the province. Nova Scotia lobbied in 2016 to get the number of immigrants increased in the province allowed in a year through Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP). The NSNP is the popular Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) of the province. Nova Scotia got its PNP allocation increased twice in last one year.
Nova Scotia is expecting more immigrants through NSNP this year
The province of Nova Scotia is expecting a total of 2150 newcomers in 2017, however, the break up with regards to immigrant categories has not been revealed by the government till date. The efforts and lobbying by the government of Nova Scotia has really paid off as the province has been successful in inviting and welcoming more number of immigrants in recent times.
Newcomers are also expected through new Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)
The Nova Scotia is also a key participant in the newly launched Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) along with rest of the Atlantic Provinces, i.e. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Hence, apart from NSNP, the newcomers in the province may also arrive through the AIPP. The federal government has structured this new immigration program to invite 2,000 immigrants in the Atlantic Provinces including Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia needs Immigrants for right Demographic balance
The Ivany Report, projecting the economic blueprint of the province has advised to enhance the immigration in the country in view of decreasing birth rate and outmigration. As per the report, the workforce of the province will be reduced by 100,000 in next 15 years, and the birth rate of the province is not convincing enough to replace the same. Report suggests that province should try to attract about 7,000 immigrants annually by the year 2024 to meet the rising demographic challenges of Nova Scotia.
